Creek View, The Dalles, Oregon
Residential Development
Creek View is a small residential development bordered by gurgling Mill Creek on two sides, and shaded by a tall native basalt bluff and large locust trees along its west property line. Soft, naturalistic landscaping envelops the six contemporary homes. A wide, sweeping path leads to a small patio at the south end and connects the homes’ front entrances. Creek View’s landscape was designed by Marion McNew of Mount Hood Gardens and was installed in the Spring of 2006.
Plantings: The west edge of the path exhibits a rock garden-style planting and inserted basalt stones link with the adjacent bluff. The small, curved borders between the front entrances are graced with abundant, colorful plantings of herbs, perennials and ornamental grasses. The majority of the north street plantings contain generous groupings of ornamental grasses, low- maintenance shrubs, perennials and dwarf conifers. Two Paperbark Maples soften the tall, north-facing wall of the home closest to the street. Ferns and native shrubs planted near Mill Creek’s south portion echo streamside vegetation.
Creek View’s east driveway leads to the owners’ garage entrances in the back. Large basalt boulders were set along the lower side of the paving, to retain its edge and also to create informal seating spaces alongside Mill Creek. A fresh, cool breeze seems to linger here in the summer and the peaceful surroundings form a surprising contrast to the busy street nearby.
