Maintenance

Public gardens need regular maintenance to look their best. Shown here is Overlook Memorial Park in downtown Hood River, Oregon.

It is important to consider a garden’s maintenance needs from the onset. Landscapes are naturally dynamic and change over time. Any garden will need a certain amount of maintenance to develop its full potential and aesthetic value. Design and installation can be geared toward creating a low-maintenance garden, by choosing the appropriate plants and garden style. Thorough, organic soil preparation will produce a vibrant soil life, resulting in healthy, sustainable plant growth and increased pest and disease resistance. Quality, well-laid hardscape materials and superior construction of structures lead to longevity and success of a landscape. The first year or two after planting any garden will need careful attention in terms of maintenance, especially correct watering and weed control. A properly designed and installed garden will display decreased maintenance and water needs over time.

MAINTENANCE PROGRAMS

At Mount Hood Gardens, we assist our clients with maintaining their landscapes, using organic materials and traditional methods wherever feasible. We offer seasonal, custom maintenance programs (usually spring and fall) and a small number of monthly contracts. We do not perform lawn maintenance. Also, we can teach you how to successfully maintain your own garden.

This residential development in The Dalles, Oregon is enhanced by graceful, soft plantings. Ornamental grasses and dwarf conifers are low-maintenance once established.

"Marion, I can’t even begin to tell you how wonderful you are. I would have been in the biggest mess of all time if you hadn't had the crew come while I was gone. Thank you so much!"

— B. D, The Dalles, Oregon
